SPORT The race continues: TAG Heuer and Porsche reveal a very special car project

The two icons celebrate the 60th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera with a tribute car like no other, a Porsche 718 GT4 RS Panamericana Special.

The celebrations keep on coming for the TAG Heuer Carrera. On its 60th anniversary, we’ve had several new releases and tribute events. It’s the least we can do for a watch that has brought so much joy to owners, collectors, and enthusiasts.

And now, together with our partners at Porsche, we’ve created yet another unique tribute. A gesture that speaks to our shared history, our common origin story that began with La Carrera Panamericana, often known as ‘the last great road race’. The name ‘Carrera’, and the legend behind the race, has inspired both the watchmaker and the car manufacturer for decades. So to honor this rich racing heritage and the TAG Heuer Carrera, Porsche and TAG Heuer present the Porsche 718 GT4 RS Panamericana Special, a sports car that is a physical manifestation of the exhilarating partnership between the two icons.

A reunion to remember

The Porsche 718 GT4 RS Panamericana Special will be unveiled at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion on 29 September 2023 at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. It’s where the world’s largest gathering of Porsche race cars and drivers meet. You’ll find new and longtime Porsche enthusiasts, owners, and collectors as well as renowned drivers and engineers. It isn’t just new vehicles that are revealed at the event, you’ll also discover some of the rarest Porsche models ever made. The Porsche Rennsport Reunion is a ‘part motorsport, part car show, and part family reunion’.

A dash of history

The interior of the Porsche 718 GT4 RS Panamericana Special is dotted with striking details. Take the dashboard for example. As a nod to TAG Heuer’s long history of crafting dashboard mounted timing devices, the car comes with new timers inspired by the original Heuer Rally Master, a device that separated the time telling and chronograph functions.

On one side you had the Master-Time, a clock with an eight-day power reserve made possible by the Calibre 63, a double barrel movement. The Master-Time was paired with the Monte Carlo chronograph. Named after the famous rally it had center recording seconds and minutes with a jump hour recorder. Together the clock and the chronograph became a firm fixture in competition cars from the late 1950s onwards. The Heuer Rally Master was often made available as optional equipment in sports cars, particularly those from Porsche.

Racing into the future

Our ambassador Patrick Dempsey won’t just be unveiling the new car at the event, he will also be competing with it at this year’s La Carrera Panamericana in October. The car perfectly captures TAG Heuer and Porsche’s common roots and motorsport heritage. Its sleek design, a modern interpretation of the legendary Porsche 550 Coupé, is an homage to Porsche’s participation in the 1953 edition of La Carrera Panamericana.

This collaboration further solidifies the partnership between TAG Heuer and Porsche. You’ve seen a whole range of TAG Heuer x Porsche watches. Now you’ve got a car. We look forward to seeing what’s next.

The Porsche Rennsport Reunion takes place between 28 September and 1 October 2023.

La Carrera Panamericana will be held between 12 and 19 October 2023.
