SPORT The FlyingNikka Delivers on All Fronts

We were eagerly anticipating this exchange. After our discussion with the team project manager of FlyingNikka Alessio Razzeto, who shared the team’s goals for the 2024 season a few months ago, we had the honor of discussing with Roberto Lacorte, the team captain and helmsman, to update us after several months of Mediterranean racing. The world’s most advanced foiling yacht has lived up to its reputation.
Winning Bets
“This season has been pivotal for us,” begins Roberto Lacorte. “Everything we implemented during the winter break to enhance the boat’s performance has proven effective. It’s a testament to the dedication of everyone involved in the project, from the design team to the technicians and crew members.”
Key achievements include getting the boat to lift off in 8.5 knots (15.5 km/h) of wind, compared to the 9.5 knots (17.5 km/h) required last season. “This means we’re more agile; it’s the most significant improvement we’ve made this season,” he enthuses.
Another significant advancement and challenge this season has been maintaining the boat’s performance in all conditions, starting with night sailing when races last for long hours. “Flying at 35 to 40 knots (64 to 74 km/h) without a clear view of the horizon or the surrounding area is very challenging, especially when you want to push the boat’s performance as you do during the day. Night navigation has been the most significant challenge we’ve faced this season. It’s a new aspect of sailing that we need to tackle.”
But it opens up new horizons for the crew. “It’s another reason to push forward, explore new technologies, and once again push our limits in various wind conditions and, importantly, different wave conditions,” explains Lacorte.
And the captain knows he has a cohesive team to achieve this. “It’s all about teamwork. The team comprises many departments that collaborate extensively. I particularly enjoy this kind of project where many people are involved; the human factor is crucial,” he shares.
Timing and Precision
Their shared mission is simple: push their limits and those of the boat. “Limits are closely tied to time and precision,” Roberto Lacorte explains.
“The FlyingNikka, much like the movements of a watch, is composed of numerous elements closely linked and functioning with great precision to achieve victories or set records. This is one of the reasons our partnership with TAG Heuer is so natural and evident. For example, we are working on a significant record attempt between Monte Carlo, France and Porto Cervo, Italy. We must decide the best moment based on weather and wave forecasts to maximize the boat’s performance during this attempt. Time is crucial, and it’s fantastic to rely on TAG Heuer. It’s a mutual collaboration that I believe is just beginning.”
It’s a fact, Roberto Lacorte never parts with his TAG Heuer timepieces. “I use the TAG Heuer Connected watches for all my training activities, recording all the data, and they help me a lot.” Onboard, like all other team members, he explains that he proudly wears the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300, a versatile sport watch for diving and outdoor exploration.
New Ambitions
What are the next big steps for the FlyingNikka ? Beyond improving the boat’s night performance, the team aims to break the speed record for the crossing between Monte Carlo and Porto Cervo. “We are capable of doing it,” he explains, “we now need to find a window to sail in November.” Needless to say, TAG Heuer will support the team in their record-breaking attempt. “We are pioneering a new discipline in this field, introducing an entirely new way of sailing. I believe TAG Heuer and the FlyingNikka are just embarking on their shared journey, united by a common vision and cutting-edge technology that drive us forward.” It’s because FlyingNikka is constantly pushing back the boundaries of technology, with the principle of remaining at the forefront, that the partnership with TAG Heuer, which shares this same vision, has come to fruition and will continue.
