STORIES Designed to Win: Inside Max Verstappen’s Mindset

1min

From karting playgrounds to world championships, Max Verstappen reveals the inner margin that defines a champion — a blend of instinct, clarity, and a mindset forged long before Formula 1®.

We sat down with four-time World Champion and Oracle Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen at an exclusive TAG Heuer interview to explore what Designed to Win truly means to him — not only as a statement, but as the mindset that shapes his craft, his limits, and the constant push to go further.

For Max Verstappen, Designed to Win isn’t a motto — it’s something that feels “natural.” A mindset shaped during childhood with a father who taught him to think, question, and push. “Since I was a little kid, that’s what I worked on with my dad.”

Karting may have felt like “a big playground,” but his education and exchanges built a foundation of composure and confidence. “I was confident, but I was also not overstressing it,” he recalls. By the time he reached Formula 1®, “nothing was really overwhelming… the hardest bit was already done.”

It wasn’t preparation. It was formation — the base layer of an identity built on pushing one’s own limits. This same mindset fuels Oracle Red Bull Racing, a team that embodies relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation at every level.

« From seven, eight years old, that was always the target … It was always about learning from what my dad already experienced in racing and trying to be better, faster. »

THE EXTRA CAPACITY PRINCIPLE

At the core of Max Verstappen’s approach lies a decisive idea: the margin that separates fast from unbeatable is invisible. “A lot of drivers can be very quick… but they’re at full capacity to achieve that.” The very best, he explains, “drive as fast or a little bit faster, plus having that extra capacity.”

This spare mental bandwidth — the ability to stay composed, process more, and react without panic — is the essence of his consistency. It’s a philosophy shared by Oracle Red Bull Racing, where performance is measured not only in speed, but in the capacity to remain sharp under pressure. “At the end of the day, you are your own person,” he says. Others can guide you, “but it needs to be inside of you.” For Max Verstappen, the equation remains simple: “I know what I can do… If I don’t perform, I’m out. It’s as simple as that.”

THE CLARITY OF NOW

Max Verstappen doesn’t lose time replaying the past or projecting too far ahead. His compass is the moment at hand. “I just try not to overcomplicate things,” he explains — a simplicity that sharpens his competitiveness. Outside the car, he keeps life deliberately grounded. “I just try to keep my life super simple… nothing crazy.”

Still, even after four world championships, he maintains a sense of discovery. “Sometimes I still surprise myself,” he admits. And he believes the next chapter holds even more: “I hope the next five years still have a lot more progression to come.”

Because for someone truly Designed to Win — and for a team like Oracle Red Bull Racing — the real edge isn’t speed. It’s the capacity to keep finding more.
