What is friction and how is it tackled?

In its most fundamental state, friction is resistance. It slows down moving parts as they come into contact with other elements and materials, be it the pistons constantly pumping inside a Formula 1® power unit or the gears turning inside a TAG Heuer timepiece.

In theory, reducing friction increases efficiency, aiding the successful transfer and conversion of energy into outright speed and accuracy. However, in reality, it is far from simple.
